For the last fortnight my computer has been tempemental at staring by pressing the button, however it will start when plugged into the mains,  is it ok to continue using it this way? It is about 8years old and well backed up on an external hard drive.

I am no expert Anne, but it does sound like a battery problem to me if it works okay when it is plugged in.  You may be able to get a new battery if you need to use it away from mains power.  I tend to use mine plugged into the mains most of the time, so I don't think you will do it any harm.  I am sure there are others who may be able to give you more help.

If the battery is pretty much dead, using it plugged in all of the time is fine - just inconvenient. If you leave a computer with a good battery plugged in all of the time it doesn't get chance to drain and recharge which can reduce the life of the battery.

OH who knows these things says you probably need a new battery. Even if you recharge your battery they do wear out, and if it has served you well for 8 years you have done very well out of it.
Remove the battery, do an E-bay search using the part number, you should find new ones for about a £tenner.

Hubby has been using his laptop plugged into the mains for years, (probably because he is too mean to buy another battery/or laptop.)
