I've cut a cutting mat in half and tried it.  It needs a good shim and it has cut, but not in some places. I think I'll stick to the plates.  It would have been great in not distorting the plates if it had worked. Maybe i needed a thicker mat.

I have a couple of dies that don't cut clean. I cut up an old fleece (covered in canal lock grease) and cut rectangles to fit my machine. It wasn't a thick one, but still has a bit of bounce and give in it. Add one in to the sandwich and cuts are much better.

I think I'll try this out. I am using a B plate that is in two halves, which I bought from eBay and broke after 2 uses. I always use various shims anyway, depending on the intricacies of the die. With regard to a magnetic plate, I suppose any magnetic sheet would do as in effect it is used with shims so thickness doesn't matter. Or it could be omitted.
